Painting your home can be a quick and cheap makeover that will bring in great results. But the first step you have to take before executing this plan is to choose the right paint. There are basically two types of paint, and they are oil and latex. Oil based paint is an excellent primer for wooden moldings and trim. This because it has the ability to tightly seal knots and stains from the wood. However, one disadvantage of using oil based paint is that it takes longer to dry compared to its latex counterpart. Latex paint is the more popular type of paint due to its durability and resistance to fading. Latex paint is also easy to clean, making them ideal for walls and other household items. Aside from being oil or latex based, paint also comes in various types of sheen: • Gloss This type of paint sheen is easier to clean as it does not absorb dirt easily. If you get grease and other stains on your wall, they will be easier to remove if you have used a glossy paint. High gloss paint is often used for trim as it gives it a finished appearance. • Semi-Gloss If gloss paint is too shiny for your taste, you can opt for a semi-gloss version. Semi-gloss paint is cheaper and can be clean easily, making them a common alternative to glossy paint. • Flat or Matte paint. One great thing about matte paint is it gives the surface a more even look, covering many imperfections. However matte paint is very susceptible to dirt and is not as easy to clean as glossy paint. • Eggshell Over the recent years, eggshell paint has become quite popular. This is because like flat paint, it is great in hiding imperfections giving the surface a smoother look. However unlike flat paint, eggshell is easier to wash, and thus provide more convenience to homeowners.
